Does anyone still keep their bunny in a cage with a wire floor?
Everyone knows how horrible it is to keep animals in a cage with a wire floor, especially bunnies because they don’t have foot pads like cats and dogs. But why do stores like Pets Mart market cages with wire floors to bunnies?
Hi…I’ve been raising and showing rabbits for 10 years. I do and always have kept my rabbits on wire floors, just as the majority of reputable breeders do. It is the most healthy, clean, efficient, and convenient type of housing. As long as they do not get sore hocks (places rubbed raw on their feet) they are completely comfortable and fine. There are plastic resting mats that have slots so the droppings can still fall through and having one of these in the cage with the rabbit prevents any sore hocks. Straw can be used but is very messy and gets wound and weaved through the wire making it extremely difficult to clean, so it is not the best way but it does work as well.
