How can I make a dress look lolita?
the dress is like, a black, spaghetti strap, knee length, with some like butterflies and flowers embroidered on it. and its got this white ribbon that goes through the middle. I really believe this could pass as gothic lolita, with some editing. I don’t mind sewing, and if you people can give me some ideas, like what i can do to make it puffy-er, or where should i place the frills and laces. thank you very much<3
There are three things (besides being knee-length, which you’ve already said it is) it really needs to have or you simply can’t.
1. It needs to be able to accommodate a petticoat. (A petticoat is an underskirt that is really poofy that lolita wear, in case you didn’t know.) If the dress isn’t full enough to be really poofy it just doesn’t work, and you can’t really make it fuller.
2. It needs to flare out at the true waist. Most things you’ll find in a department store or at the mall have the waist at the hips. The true waist is generally the thinnest part of your waist, just a tad above your belly button.
3. Good fabric. It needs to be not sheer, and not shiny, and not some weird wrinkly fabric.
If you’ve got all of that, all you need to do is coordinate it properly and it already is lolita. If you don’t, it can’t be helped.
How I would coordinate it: Get a frilly white bolero to wear over it to fix the spaghetti straps thing. It can be a thin one so it’s comfortable to wear during summer. (Spaghetti straps aren’t so much lolita, as you may already know.) I’d wear it with white knee-high socks, without lace for a slightly more casual look, black maryjanes, and a black and white (and not over the top) hair accessory like a small-ish bow.
