What is the best way to dye nylon material?

I recently purchased a shirt on ebay which looked black, but in person is more of a grey color. I will be using this for a Halloween costume, and it needs to be black. The shirt is a see-through mesh-y material, similar to pantyhose. I plan to dye the shirt this evening, but I was wondering if anyone with experience dying pantyhose has any advice?

I work in plastics research, so here is the short answer.

Unfortunately you are kind of limited when it comes to dying nylon once it has been formed into it’s final shape. In this case, the fibers of a shirt. Nylon is actually pigmented (pigments are non-soluble while dyes are). The pigments are melted into concentrated plastic pellets that are then re-melted and woven into fibers. The fibers are then spun into a shirt.
Nylon does not take dye well. It tends to “leech” out if it does manage to absorb any at all.
You can try dying the fabric in very hot water (near boiling). Nylon is hydroscopic (takes on water), so it may absorb some of the dye with it.
Other than that, there is little you can do.
